Green Without Envy
Sometimes the world can be a very overwhelming place.
With such a technological world moving faster and faster everyday, the demands on time, attention and details can be too much pressure to handle. So what is a simple solution?
Whether one is in an apartment or a house, one can turn to the simple world of growing things.
It can be so destressing to literally get down in the dirt with a couple of house plants or, ideally, in a garden. A plant or two in the house adds color to one’s décor and oxygen to the air. Yes, plants can be a problem if you travel, but most don’t have to be watered every day. Once a week will do.
Succulents or a cactus are just fine with a little water once a month. Plants are not a big investment, so if one’s thumb isn’t green, and the poor thing dies, it is no great loss. It was probably nice while it lasted. Keep the pot and try again when the mood strikes.
If one only has a balcony or a deck and no room for a real garden, there is usually room for a few small pots. How satisfying to cook with your own chives, tomatoes, dill or basil? The smells are so homey and very destressing.
If one prefers the colors and smells of flowers, that is great, too. Petunias have a great smell and do well in full sun.
If one needs flowers for a shady area, pansies are pretty.
If one is blessed with an area for a real garden, he/she could plant those things that are enjoyed and are easily managed. Perhaps a couple of tomato plants, some lettuce, a potato and a cucumber hill appeal? How about a row of carrots?
Getting down and dirty is fun, purposeful, and can give one something else to focus on rather than any source of stress.
Try it; you might like it!
