ADHD & ND Support - Edmonton & St. Albert Psychologists
More and more, we are realizing that Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is more prevalent than we think. ADHD is usually diagnosed in childhood, but recently, more adults have realized the struggles they had in childhood and are exploring the possibility of having adult ADHD. ADHD, like most disorders exists on a spectrum, what works for one person with ADHD may not work for another. Our ADHD therapists explore how ADHD is impacting your life and work with you to develop tools to improve work performance, personal struggles and relationships and manage your ADHD symptoms. Our goal with ADHD counselling is not to try and make you think and behave in a neurotypical box but instead to create your own path where you thrive!
Understanding ADHD and Neurodiversity:
ADHD affects millions of people worldwide, with symptoms ranging from difficulty concentrating and impulsivity to hyperactivity. Similarly, neurodiversity encompasses a wide range of neurological differences, including autism, dyslexia, and ADHD. While these conditions present challenges, they also bring unique strengths and perspectives to the table. Our ADHD psychologists aim to find these unique strengths with you.
Statistics:
According to the Centre for ADHD Awareness Canada (CADDAC), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in Canada, affecting 4-6% of adults and 5-7% of children, or approximately 1.8 million Canadians. In other words, 1 of every 21 people in the country has the disorder. Everyone who has ADHD is impaired or has more difficulty than normal with regulating their attention or focus.
Benefits of Psychotherapy for Managing ADHD and ND Symptoms:
Summit Counselling Service’s ADHD/ND psychologists at both our Edmonton and St. Albert locations provide support for clients in the following areas:
Skill Development: Therapy equips individuals with ADHD and ND with practical strategies to manage their symptoms effectively. ADHD Counselling provides valuable tools for navigating daily challenges, from organization skills to time management techniques.
Emotional Regulation: Many individuals with ADHD and ND struggle with emotional regulation. Therapy helps cultivate emotional awareness and coping mechanisms, empowering individuals to navigate their emotions in a healthy and constructive manner.
Improved Relationships: Communication difficulties and social challenges are common among individuals with ADHD and ND. Through counselling, individuals learn valuable communication skills and strategies for building and maintaining healthy relationships with others.
Self-Acceptance and Empowerment: Counselling provides a safe and non-judgmental space for individuals to explore their identities and embrace their strengths. By fostering self-acceptance and empowerment, therapy paves the way for personal growth and fulfillment.
Enhanced Academic and Professional Performance: With the right support and strategies, individuals with ADHD and ND can excel academically and thrive in their careers. Counselling helps identify academic and professional goals and provides tailored support to achieve them.
Trauma Therapy: Growing up feeling different, struggling with academics and social relationships. Peers and parents are frustrated with you because they don’t understand why you can’t just “DO THE THING.” Feeling not good enough, feeling different, feeling… anything. Trauma is often present in people who have been formally or informally diagnosed as neuro-spicy. Processing this trauma, if evident, is an important aspect of our ADHD counselling process.
Our Approach:
Our psychologists take a holistic approach to ADHD and ND therapy, addressing each individual's unique needs and strengths. Our experienced psychologists specialize in evidence-based techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Accelerated Resolution therapy (ART), Play Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapies, Animal-Assisted Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Therapies.
The psychology team at both our Edmonton and St. Albert offices believes in collaboration and empowerment. We work closely with clients to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their goals and aspirations. Our goals are symptom management, personal growth, resilience, and overall well-being.
