What Is Somatic Experiencing Therapy?

Somatic Experiencing Therapy (SE) believes that trauma gets “stuck” in the body. In SE therapy, the focus is on releasing the body from fight/flight/freeze/fawn response and allowing the body to heal from trauma, not just the mind. SE looks at trauma as a physical sensation that gets stuck in the body, which puts us in a constant state of arousal. Our nervous system continues to believe we are in danger even when the traumatic event is over. SE helps people learn how to recognize, acknowledge and then release trauma from the body.
