What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective evidence-based treatment practice that has been found to be successful for several mental health concerns including: anxiety, depression, self-esteem and self-compassion, attachment work, trauma and relationship concerns. CBT explores negative beliefs about the self that may be triggering certain feelings and behaviours. Once those beliefs are uncovered, CBT then challenges those beliefs with factual and accurate reframes. CBT relies heavily on the concept of neuroplasticity - which is just a fancy way of saying we can retrain our brain and build stronger thought pathways. Think of it like a path in the forest - if you’ve thought a negative statement enough times that path becomes easier and easier for your brain to go to. CBT attempts to build new, more positive neural pathways by challenging those negative thought patterns and building new pathways that then become the easier path for your brain to take.

What Can CBT Help With?

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the broadest and well known therapeutic approach. More often than not, elements of CBT are incorporated into other therapeutic models to create a treatment plan that best supports you. Some common areas where CBT is often used are:
